Not Yet
Temporary. Unsure. Still unable to take the step forward.
I have to admit, these are not good places to be in. Even as I write this, I am thinking, should I even consider this? Yet, it happens and I do want us to talk about it.
Reminder #1: Some things (and people) take time.
I noticed I have shorter tolerance for waiting, for people and for things to happen compared to when I was younger. It must be because the world promises me instant gratification at every turn. Apps, wifi, bank transfers, mobile phone, movies on demand.... everything evolved to promise instantaneous access to whatever I need.
It does not even matter if I believe them (hint: 3rd world wifi speed). It just is my state of mind.
However, though these things may have helped me be more efficient, I should also be aware of how they affect my disposition to waiting. My internal psyche even. Awareness, is my first step. Just being aware of the annoyance is already a “value check”.
Reminder #2: Meanwhile is important when it takes a while.
What do I do meanwhile? Throwing back the challenge to ourselves hand us back control over the situation or the expectation.
When things you worked on still do not seem to bear fruit, what do you do? Give up? Of course not. You just keep working on it, improving it and evaluating what would make it finally tick.
When we are waiting for people to change, what do you do meanwhile? You change. Sometimes, when you do, they change too.
When nothing is happening and you want things to change? Fill your meanwhile with meaningful activities and the right path will manifest itself.
Reminder #3: Be ready.
Which brings me to this point. Be ready. Do not be caught unaware when things finally start moving, when people start to reach out to you, when situations change. Notice. Channel your emotions to being ready rather that towards being anxious.
Reminder #4 : Be open to surprises.
Then again, what we may be waiting for may take a different form, may be answered in a different way. Even with people you want to change, it may also happen that how they really are is actually better than how you want them to be. Be open to be surprised when you put an effort on things or people. You might just get lucky.
Reminder #5: Patience is a virtue.
Sometimes, what we gain from a certain situation or expectation is not material. It may be a lesson, a virtue, a chance encounter, a new insight.
No matter what it is, take it and use it.
Not yet is not necessarily a bad place to be in. It may not be ideal. However, what is? The moment, the situation, the person we are while we are waiting is what matters. Savor it. Appreciate it. Strengthen it.
Not yet should lead us to hope that when our heart is in the right place, the best is YET to come... always!
