Life Scripts

What's the plan?

Have you met people who no matter how life treats them, they seem to have the same conclusion or goes the same direction.

People who, for example, have in their environment the best type of people but always ends up with people who mistreat them, or takes advantage of them. There are also those who despite being the midst of the worse situation seems to get through them and get through the situation victorious.

The way we act, the way we perceive how people and life treats us is what we may call "life scripts".

Life scripts are belief systems, unconscious life plans that was created in childhood because of early interactions, validations by significant people and further verified by our life experiences.  Since we operate under the perceptions created by our life scripts, unless challenged, our life scripts may manifest in our lives more and more.

Some life scripts may sound (and look like) this:

"People always leave me"
"I always put others first"
"I am better off alone"
"I will never be good enough"
"I deserve better"
"I foster loyalty"
" I live a balanced life"
"I make things work"

Those and many others.

Knowing our life scripts though is only half the battle.  The second half is realizing if our life scripts work for your or against you.  If they work for you, good.  If not, what do you do?

1.  Challenge your script.  Be uncomfortable in your assumptions and give yourself permission to think in the reverse.  Look for situations or opportunities to act differently, think differently and be perceived differently.

2.  Life scripts are often perpetuated by surrounding yourself with people who supports your life script.  If you do not have enough confidence on yourself, and is surrounded by people who only knows your limitations and not your potential, your limitations will be supported and your potential stunted.  Surround yourself with people who challenges your point of view and inspire you to feel good about the new scripts you are exploring.

3.  Brave the difference.  Performing within our life scripts can be comfortable, well sort of.  Being validated by outcomes no matter if it is good or bad, if it was how you predicted it is somehow easy to get used to.  Be patient with yourself if it is uncomfortable.  You will soon develop a new script when circumstances validate your new point of view.  It will be empowering to say the least to triumph over preconceived scripts that may have been crippling us, our relationships, our lives for a long time.

4.  How about NO SCRIPTS? Rewriting your life script may take time.  However, unlearning of our script is necessary to move forward to new territories of productivity and joy.  Let life surprise you from time to time.

So next time you sense that your life seems to be running in the same circle, examine your life story, your life script.  When change of scenery, change of relationship or change of job no longer works, look within.
